Chapter Eleven

“What did Kate say?” Fleur asked as we left the storage room.

The competition organisers had arrived and were making a fuss about their loss of ingredients, so Kate thought it best we make ourselves scarce.

“Vanessa Brookes might be missing,” I said. I didn’t like the woman, but I hoped she had just run off to be alone somewhere.

“Do you really think the parsnips are hemlock?” Gemma asked as if she hadn't heard our conversation.

Susan patted her on the arm and pulled her in for a hug. “The Detective did say she would get them tested, but I think it's a forgone conclusion.”

“I just... I just,” Gemma swallowed and shook her head. “I can't get my head around what might have happened if I'd baked the hemlock into a cake.”

“Nothing good,” Fleur confirmed.

“Are we working on the assumption that Vanessa is also a target of the killer?” Susan asked.

“I've been thinking about that and something doesn't sit right with me.” The door to the elevator opened in front of us and we entered. Gemma pressed the button for our floor, and I allowed the doors to close whilst sorting through my thoughts before continuing. “The man in the baby blue shirt was stabbed. If we’re looking at the same killer, why would they poison Jeremy, stab the man, and then try to poison Vanessa along with every other judge? It doesn't make any sense.”

Susan rubbed her head. “I could do with a drink.”

I agreed. So much for my relaxing break. The elevator opened on our floor, and Susan suggested they all go to her room and order room service.

“I'll meet you there in about ten minutes. Order me a gin and tonic, please.” I looked down at the borrowed skirt I still wore. I'd had more than a couple of funny looks as we'd passed people, and even though I wouldn't be seen by anyone else in Susan's room, I'd feel more comfortable if I changed.

I entered my room and shut the door behind me. I closed my eyes and sagged against it, enjoying the moment’s silence. It had been a crazy day, and I didn't see it improving. What I really needed was another massage or even better, a full night’s sleep. I sighed. A quick shower would have to suffice. I pushed away from the door and turned to the right to go directly into my ensuite when I felt a movement in the room behind me. Before I had a chance to react, a hand landed over my mouth.

“I'm not going to hurt you,” a man's voice said. “Don't scream. I just want to talk.”

I readied my magic and was about to fling my assailant across the room when he released my mouth and stepped away from me.

I drew in a deep breath and decided it wouldn't hurt to hear what he had to say; flinging him against the wall was still an option if necessary. There was no doubt in my mind this was related to the murders, and he might be able to provide some answers.
